New approaches for land management

New approaches to improving land allocation and management were on the agenda at a recent two day National Land Forum held in Maseru.

Opening the Forum, the Prime Minister, Mr Pakalitha Mosisili, said that it was a meeting long overdue and that if concerted action was not taken to address land issues now there would be nothing left of Lesotho in 20 years.

He told the many stakeholders gathered that everyone in Lesotho was affected; while some have the authority to distribute and administer land, all have the responsibility to respect land and the land law.

The Forum's theme was Sensitisation of Stakeholders on Land Management in Lesotho.
Its objectives were to:

  1. share the existing situation of land allocation and land management and their implications for Lesotho 's overall development;
  2. enhance the awareness of key stakeholders of their roles and functions in relation to land allocation and land management; and
  3. create a platform for key stakeholders to contribute to defining a new approach to improving land allocation and land management.

The Forum was supported by German Technical Cooperation (GTZ).
